The Innovation of the Year Awards recognizes unique, state-of-the-art electronics products in several categories. Prism 3.0 is a finalist in the Embedded-System Technologies category.  Samplify Systems' next generation Prism 3.0 IP delivers higher signal quality, and lower latency for optimum data transmission in next-generation wireless and medical imaging applications.  Implemented on popular FPGA platforms and the company's intelligent data converters, Prism 3.0 has numerous enhancements specifically for wireless base station, computed tomography (CT), and medical ultrasound applications.  

Prism 3.0 dramatically reduces decompression complexity without sacrificing compression ratios.  The Prism 3.0 engine nearly halves the use of FPGA logic resources. Additionally, its encoding format has been optimized for software decoding offering a 200 percent improvement in decompression performance on x86-based CPUs or graphics processing units (GPU).  With 3x the decompression performance on the back-end processor, Prism 3.0 eliminates backplane bottlenecks between the data acquisition hardware and the software-processing domain.

Latency is a critical measure in real-time signal processing. With a new flow-through pipelined design, latency through compression and decompression is reduced to less than 1 microsecond and is independent of packet size to meet the requirements of wireless repeater and 4G wireless base station applications such as LTE (Long-Term Evolution).  

With Prism 3.0, designers can perform tradeoffs to determine acceptable ratios of compression, from lossless to lossy, to suite to their particular application. Benefits include lower pin counts, reduced board area, smaller and cheaper memories, and narrower and less expensive busses and networks, including those using the fastest and most expensive SerDes transceivers.
