SAMS Completes Life-Saving Ramadan Medical Mission in Syria, Delivering Critical Care and Training to Hundreds

Syrian American Doctors performed life-saving procedures and training during Ramadan amid healthcare crisis

WASHINGTON, March 19, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- During this month of Ramadan, the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) is proud to announce the successful completion of its Medical Mission to Syria, where 16 volunteer doctors provided life-saving procedures, urgent medical care, and vital training to local healthcare professionals during the holy month.

Over the course of the week-long mission, SAMS medical volunteers delivered more than 621 patient consultations, performed 97 surgical and interventional procedures, and conducted 38 specialized training sessions for 916 local healthcare workers. Working across specialties such as interventional cardiology, oncology, nephrology, ophthalmology, pediatrics, and maternal health, the team provided expert care—free of charge—to patients who otherwise had no access to specialized treatments.

Among the many lives touched, the team performed a life-saving cardiac intervention for a father of 15 suffering from a severe heart condition, restoring his health and his ability to care for his family. Other patients facing life-threatening illnesses received complex surgeries and interventions that renewed their hope for the future.

This mission, which began as Ramadan commenced, was carried out in a newly liberated Syria, where the healthcare system continues to face enormous challenges after more than a decade of conflict. Hospitals remain under-resourced, and access to specialized care is extremely limited. The SAMS team fasted alongside their patients during the holy month, demonstrating extraordinary compassion and resilience while providing critical care.

Topics ranged from cardiac interventions to maternal health and oncology, ensuring that future generations of Syrian healthcare professionals are equipped with the latest medical knowledge and skills.
