Samuel l. Newhouse Foundation Donates $1 Million to American Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy Relief

NEW YORK, Nov. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation is donating $1 million to the American Red Cross to assist with disaster relief in New York, New Jersey and Delaware in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the Foundation announced today.

Many of the hardest hit areas are home to the magazine, newspaper and digital companies of Advance Publications, Inc., and the donation by the Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation will help provide for critical immediate and ongoing recovery needs in those locations.

The American Red Cross is helping people across 13 states with safe shelter, food and comfort as part of a huge disaster response to Sandy. More than 6,800 people spent Wednesday night in Red Cross shelters and the Red Cross has activated nearly 200 response vehicles that are beginning to circulate through communities distributing meals, water and snacks. More than 2,300 disaster workers are arriving from all over the country to care for disaster victims. The Red Cross continues to reach into more and more communities as they are safe and passable.
