San Diego Nonprofit, STEP, Cares for Military and Veteran Families During Holiday Season
SAN DIEGO, Dec. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Support the Enlisted Project, STEP, wraps up its Sharing the Joy holiday program. The program strives to help young military and veteran families that are going through or recovering from a financial rough patch this year to not get lost in the season of giving.
"The holiday spirit in all of us knows that it's hard to watch young families sacrifice the ability to provide even the smallest of gifts to their children during the holiday season. This is a way we can help the young military parents convey a little hope and joy to their children this holiday season," said Steve McClelland, the program's coordinator.
STEP was able to help more than 500 enlisted military and veteran family members throughout Southern California have something under the tree this Christmas. Accomplishing this feat meant engaging and recruiting many community partners, both corporate and individual families, to either "adopt" the families or sponsor toy drives to support distribution of gifts to the children. The months of preparation made the program truly rewarding to those being helped and to those gracious enough to lend a helping hand.
"That just made my day and my Christmas," said one corporate executive after being told that her company truly touched lives in a profound way this year as a young military father broke down in tears of elation when being presented his family's gifts. The father was in awe of the fact that complete strangers would do so much to have such a positive impact on his family.
For STEP, support doesn't end or begin with holidays. In the past 12 months, STEP granted more than $386,000 to our military community, which included preventing 107 utility disconnections, 104 auto repossessions and 82 housing evictions along with providing 257 families with two weeks of food.
