Sao Carlos Obtains Brazil's First LEED® Silver Certification in The Multiple Buildings Concept

SAO PAULO, Sept. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Sao Carlos Empreendimentos e Participacoes S.A. (BM&FBovespa: SCAR3) has just obtained LEED® Certification for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance (EB:O&M), in the Silver category, version 3.0, Multiple Buildings, granted by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

Thanks to this certification, the buildings are now recognized for their high environmental performance, exemplified by:

• Energy consumption 41% lower than the national average for similar existing buildings;
• Energy consumption in common areas 20% lower than the same period in 2010;
• Cooling tower water consumption 35% down on the same period last year;
• No use of drinking water for garden irrigation.

Located in Alphaville and managed by Jones Lang LaSalle, the projects obtained sustainability advisory and LEED® certification from CTE - Centro de Tecnologia de Edificacoes. The buildings have 13,800 sq.m of built-up area and 13 floors each, the underground levels being shared with other new buildings in the commercial complex.

LEED® Existing Buildings: O&M certification is granted after the construction phase, when the building is already leased and in operation. It ensures consistent project management, based on maintenance equipment policies and processes; energy, water and waste management, as well as the management of services (e.g. cleaning and landscaping). The final purpose is to maximize operating efficiency and minimize environmental impacts.
