DENVER, April 30, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The majority of moms and dads (52 and 48 percent, respectively) expect a gift of $30 or less this Mother's and Father's Day, according to survey results released today from ShopAtHome.com, the largest coupon and Cash Back search engine used by more than 19 million consumers each month. The survey found that parents want their kids to be frugal when buying gifts for Mother's and Father's Day while graduates just want cold hard cash along with their diplomas.

The survey results also indicated that 23 percent of moms and 30 percent of dads prefer gift cards over traditional presents such as perfume or ties. What came in second? A simple greeting card, which is preferred by 22 percent of moms and 17 percent of dads.
"If you can save money finding a discounted gift card online and pair that with a heart-felt homemade card, a home-cooked meal or a simple phone call to say 'thanks, Mom and Dad'? Best. Child. Ever." says Lesley Kennedy, ShopAtHome.com senior managing editor.
Survey respondents were clear that they don't want an expensive gift from their kids; in fact time spent together was how 59 percent of moms and dads prefer to spend the holiday. If you aren't able to spend time with your mom on Mother's Day, flowers can be a really economical choice to mark the holiday. ShopAtHome.com customers spent an average of $33.64 on Mother's Day arrangements (after coupons were applied and before tax and delivery). For Dads, opt for a greeting card with a gift card tucked inside.
When it comes to graduates, nothing beats the "Benjamins," with 59 percent of respondents indicating that they prefer money as a graduation gift. Gift cards also ranked high among graduates, with 27 percent prefer receiving these.
"Contrary to popular belief there are ways to save when purchasing gift cards and many merchants even allow you to earn Cash Back when you buy them," said Kennedy.
If your loved one is a frequent shopper at places including Banana Republic, Bass Pro Shops, Columbia Sportswear, Lands' End, Lowe's or REI, you can take advantage of Cash Back offers on gift cards through ShopAtHome.com. No Cash Back deal for gift cards at the retailer you're looking for? There are sites out there that buy, sell and trade gift cards where you can save up to 30 percent on the cost.
"If you are seeking out a specific gift, get the most for your money by shopping online for deals, searching for Free Shipping coupons and earning Cash Back rewards. Mom and Dad will be happy you saved your hard-earned money," Kennedy says. "But, remember, frugal does not equal showing up empty-handed. Nearly 35 percent of moms and dads said the worst gift would be no gift at all."
