SCCE & HCCA survey reveals training governing boards on compliance is the new norm

MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 13, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Training governing boards on compliance and ethics is now the norm rather than the exception, according to "Compliance Training and The Board," a survey recently conducted by the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE) & Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA). According to the survey results, 72% of respondents report that training on compliance and ethics issues is provided to the board of directors. However, it is surprising to find 34% of respondents from publicly traded companies indicate no compliance training is performed.

"Few things demonstrate the changing nature of compliance more than the amount of training being conducted with board members," said SCCE & HCCA CEO Roy Snell. "Compliance is no longer something taken care of deep within the company. It's an issue for boards to oversee, and boards are recognizing the need to increase their expertise in compliance and compliance oversight."

The majority of compliance trainings for the board, according to survey findings, are conducted annually (71%) and occur live (73%). The survey, fielded by SCCE & HCCA in September 2017 of compliance professionals, finds satisfaction with the level of training to be flat. Just 18% of respondents were very satisfied with the amount of training on compliance matters provided to the board, compared to 42% who were somewhat satisfied, another 18% were only slightly satisfied, and 23% not at all satisfied.

Additional findings
Seventy-one percent reported that compliance and ethics training to the board is typically done annually, 16% report they train more often, while 13% report compliance training occurs less than annually. The majority of those responding to the survey report that the board's role in compliance, conflicts of interest, overall government expectations for compliance programs, and specific legal issues were the four topics most often covered during training.
