Scottsdale Medical Imaging Launches New Lung Cancer Screening Website
Arizona radiology group raises awareness of potentially lifesaving program
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., March 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Scottsdale Medical Imaging (SMIL) has launched a new website, www.checkmylungs.com, in support of a groundbreaking lung cancer screening program and to raise awareness of the importance of early detection.
The new Check My Lungs website is designed and programmed to be a unique lung cancer screening resource for patients and physicians. This innovative site provides important background information and resources along with details on how to access an appropriate screening program. The site also features an easy-to-use assessment tool to help visitors determine if lung cancer screening is right for them and to encourage discussion with their primary care physician.
"We have screening programs for breast cancer for women and prostate cancer for men- very important things- but lung cancer is still the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women in the United States," said John Neil, M.D., Chairman of the Board at SMIL.
Low-radiation dose computed tomography (CT) scans are now able to catch lung cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages often when patients have no signs or symptoms. Data from the National Cancer Institute show that when heavy smokers were screened with low-radiation dose CT scans versus traditional chest X-rays, there was a 20 percent reduction in lung cancer-related deaths.
Annual lung cancer screening was recently recommended by the US Preventive Services Task Force for those at high risk - current smokers between the ages of 55 and 79 who have smoked the equivalent of a pack a day or more for 30 years and have smoked within the past 15 years. The Task Force recommendation is that screening be performed only in clinical settings that follow evidence-based screening guidelines and use a multidisciplinary team of lung cancer specialists.
"The Check My Lungs program and its important support website are a unique collaboration between Scottsdale Medical Imaging, our community's primary care physicians, and leading specialists in lung disease and cancer care," said Dr Neil.
The new website was developed in cooperation with Scottsdale Medical Imaging and Idyllwild Advertising, a digital marketing and web development agency based in Salt Lake City, Utah.
