DALLAS, Dec. 29, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Securus Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of inmate communications services, today announced the company automated more than 4 million calls into its correctional facilities customers this year through Automated Information Services (AIS) - its voice recognition product. Automating certain calls with AIS helps an average-sized correctional facility save 2,500 labor hours per year.

Securus' AIS product is a hosted interactive voice response (IVR) system that utilizes speech recognition technology and keypad inputs made over the phone to interact with inmates and their friends and family members. Callers place calls into the correctional facility to request information such as court dates, charges, visitation eligibility, or any other information stored in the facility's jail management system (JMS) and AIS "hears" the request and provides an automated response that addresses the inquiry without manual intervention.
Correctional facilities request AIS from Securus so they can reduce the time facility staff spend answering routine questions. It enables the facility staff to focus on their core responsibilities.
For inmates and their friends and family members, AIS assists those parties in obtaining the specific information they need—when they need it. It can also help friends and family members fund a prepaid calling account or an inmate's trust account without having to ask for assistance from facility staff.
"No other inmate communications provider automates the number of calls that we do through speech recognition technology," said Matt Smith, Securus Product Manager for AIS. "We're saving correctional facilities and their staff hundreds of thousands of hours by automating the way corrections-related questions are answered. At the same time, AIS improves constituent satisfaction—since callers have quick and easy access to the information they need through a convenient, self-service resource."
