DALLAS, May 3, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Securus Technologies, a leading provider of civil and criminal justice technology solutions for public safety, investigation, corrections and monitoring, announced today that it has met with the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and discussed potential illegal actions by a competitor in the inmate telephone industry.
"Securus Technologies operates at the highest level of business integrity – and we believe that one (1) of our competitors may not operate at that same level," said Richard A. ("Rick") Smith, Chief Executive Officer of Securus Technologies. "Our Customer Integrity Pledge, that we published in 2012, makes pledges to inmates, to friends/family, and to the entire corrections community regarding the way we operate – it is clear and precisely describes our integrity, our customer service, doing work with Securus Associates versus contracting out services, never offering bribes, being truthful in responses to requests for proposal, providing security features, and much more."
"Our discussions with the FBI and the Justice Department covered what we believe to be especially egregious activity. We expect they will investigate the actions that we identified and hopefully will take enforcement actions against anyone they find that violated the law," stated Smith. In particular, Securus provided information related to potential bid rigging, potential deliberate overcharging of friends and family members on phone calls, potential bribery of government officials, potential theft of confidential information and potential misrepresentations in RFP responses to obtain government contracts. Some of these allegations represent clear criminal activity.
"There is no room in our industry for unethical and/or illegal behavior," stated Smith. "We are taking all actions necessary with law enforcement to insure that these issues are highlighted and fixed so that they are completely eliminated from the inmate telephone industry. Moreover, we plan on issuing additional information with detail of the conduct that we discussed with the authorities in several upcoming press releases over the next 90 days," said Smith.
