China is stepping towards modernization in various aspects, while agricultural modernization has become a short board of China's modernization. The level of China's agricultural development desperately needs further improvement.
"China Modernization Report 2012 - Research of Agricultural Modernization" (the Report) jointly written by Research Group of China's modernization strategy and Research Center for Modernization of Chinese Academy of Sciences was released on 13 May 2012.
The report points out that China's unit grain yield has reached the average level of developed countries, but the agricultural labor productivity is much lower than that of developed countries. The report believes that China belongs to primary agricultural developed countries and the level of agricultural modernization is lower than that of China's overall modernization.
For example, China's agricultural level in 2008 is lagging behind the UK, the US and Netherlands for over 100 years, according to the comprehensive calculation of agricultural labor productivity, proportion of agricultural added value and proportion of agricultural labor. Moreover, China's agricultural labor productivity is less than 1/10 of China's industrial labor productivity in 2008.
Based on the analysis of the development history of world's agricultual modernization and China's agricultural situation, the Report put forward the strategic objectives of China's agricultural modernization in the 21st century. The first stage of China's agricultural modernization is to achieve the medium level of agricultural modernization in 2050 and the second stage is to achieve the world's advanced level by 2100.
