CHICAGO, Oct. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Segal McCambridge Singer & Mahoney, Ltd. is pleased to announce that attorney Steven Hart is the recipient of a 2013 Trial Lawyer Excellence Award for the highest reported Illinois verdict or settlement during the past year, in recognition of the $100 million-plus settlement he obtained in Minn-Chem, Inc. et al. v. "It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by the Jury Verdict Reporter, the most respected legal reporter and source of legal information in Illinois," said Mr. Hart, a shareholder in Segal McCambridge's Chicago office. "The legal system worked extremely well in this case. All parties had an opportunity to present their respective positions before the entire 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and Chief Judge for the Northern District of Illinois, Judge Castillo. We could not have asked for a more learned group to preside over this case."
Minn-Chem, which settled in January 2013 after four years of litigation, was a complex antitrust case against seven of the world's largest potash producers and distributors. Potash, a main ingredient in agricultural fertilizers, is used in farming around the world. A small group of Canadian and Russian potash producers dominate the global market, controlling 71% of the world's supply. The Minn-Chem settlement will compensate for a 600% artificial price increase in potash those producers inflicted upon U.S. farmers and agricultural businesses between 2003 and 2008. The case is also significant in that it introduced new possibilities in e-discovery and provided a critical clarification of the extent of U.S. antitrust law in international cases. Mr. Hart led the Segal McCambridge prosecution team with assistance from shareholder Brian Eldridge and associates Elizabeth Schieber and Kyle Pozan. Bruce Simon, of Pearson, Simon & Warshaw, LLP, and Joseph Bruckner, of Lockridge Grindal Nauen P.L.L.P., served as co-counsel.
"We are so pleased for our clients," Mr. Hart reflected. "It is causes and results like this that make me extremely proud to be a trial lawyer."
Mr. Hart, a trial lawyer with more than two decades of experience, litigates a variety of civil matters including personal injury, products liability, toxic tort, environmental, automotive, and transportation cases for clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies to small businesses and individuals. Mr. Hart has tried cases to successful jury verdict throughout the country and has argued before State and Federal courts of appeal.
