September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, Save a Life, Donate Blood!
Heartland is the Leading Provider of Donated Blood for Chicago-area Hospitals
AURORA, Ill., Aug. 30, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Heartland Blood Centers, the leading supplier of donated blood to more than 70 Chicago- area hospitals, announced its support of September National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Sickle Cell Awareness Month has been recognized by the federal government since 1983, to bring attention to sickle cell disease which affects approx. 100,000 Americans.
In 2015, Heartland launched the Red is Life program to create awareness, education & action within the Greater Chicagoland area about blood donation in underrepresented communities. Studies have shown that blood donated from someone of the same ethnicity as the patient reduces the risk of complications during transfusion.
Heartland is kicking off September 1st with a blood drive at the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Illinois' (SCDAI) office. TaLana Hughes, SCDAI Executive Director said, "I'm acutely aware of the need for blood donations in the treatment of sickle cell disease, blood donors have the ability to increase the quality of life of those affected by this disease and we hope many will heed our call to donate."
Throughout September, many organizations are partnering with Heartland in support of this disease that affects so many.
