RESTON, Va., June 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Serco Inc., a provider of professional, technology, and management services to the federal government, announced today that the Company has been awarded a contract to support the United States Forces Afghanistan (USFOR-A) base closure and transition initiative through the coordination of logistics and deconstruction of bases throughout Afghanistan. The new three-year contract has a one-year base period and two one-year options with a value of $57 million, if all options are exercised.
Serco will provide Base Closure Assistance Teams (BCATs) to manage multiple concurrent base closure tasks. BCATs are responsible for organizing, coordinating and assisting military units with the key aspects of redeployment associated with base closures and transfers. Serco expects to hire over 70 employees to support this contract at various locations throughout Afghanistan.
Serco has provided similar services to the United States Forces Iraq BCATs. The Company assisted military and base commanders in the closure and return of U.S. Coalition Bases to the Government of Iraq and to local landowners. Serco also contributed to the Army's current Base Closure Smartbook, as well as the Base Closure lessons learned documents.
