Serevi RugbyTown Sevens Tournament Returns to Glendale, Colorado August 17th and 18th
Second annual international tournament and youth training camps draw top international teams and U.S. Olympic talent
GLENDALE, Colo., April 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Serevi Rugby® (www.serevirugby.com) and the City of Glendale (www.glendale.co.us) today announced that Glendale's Infinity Park will host the second annual Serevi® RugbyTown Sevens international men's sevens tournament August 17-18, 2013. Serevi Rugby® will also run a Training Camp for youth players ages seven and up on August 12-16, led by international rugby legends Waisale Serevi – the "King of Sevens;" IRB World Sevens Series record points scorer, Ben Gollings; and IRB World Sevens Series record try scorer, Santiago Gomez Cora.
"Building on the success of last year's event, we're bringing together the best international club teams, the United States' top Olympic talent, and youth players who want to take their game to the next level," said Eric Sanderson, Chief Operating Officer of Serevi Rugby. "Infinity Park is a one-of-a-kind facility to compete and train at, so everyone from players to coaches can't wait to be back in Glendale."
The Serevi RugbyTown Sevens is an invitation only tournament, drawing the best teams and players from around the world, including many players and teams who are participating in USA Rugby's Men's Olympic Development Program (ODP). As part of the ODP, Serevi Rugby and Glendale were chosen to run Olympic Development Academies (ODAs) in cities across the country, working in close partnership with National Team coaches to identify and develop emerging, high-potential rugby athletes.
Confirmed teams for this year's tournament thus far include defending champions USA Falcons, defending Las Vegas International 7s champions Serevi Selects, US Armed Forces, International Armed Forces, Olympic Development Academies, and several Tier II and III international teams.
"This event brings together the top U.S. Academy players to compete and show how the game is growing in America," said Andre Snyman, Head Coach of the Glendale Raptors and the Raptors' ODA program. "Simultaneously, it allows us to put U.S. Academy players up against the best talent from around the world."
Led by coaches Serevi, Gollings, and Gomez Cora, Serevi Rugby's progression-based Training Camp will focus on developing youth players' core rugby skills quickly over a two-day period. Players are segmented based on age and ability to ensure that everyone is appropriately challenged while coaches aim to help players execute core skills consistently under increasing amounts of game-like pressure. Additional focus areas include spatial awareness, breakdown and tackle technique, attacking and defensive strategy, decision-making, and set piece play.
"Bringing together the on-field and coaching experience of the Serevi team, our state-of-the-art facilities at Infinity Park, and many of the best players in the world provides a unique and special event for all involved," said Mark Bullock, Director of Rugby at the City of Glendale. "Our community showed their full support last year and we expect even more interest this year."
"The addition of SRS to Glendale's portfolio of recurring world class rugby events marks another milestone in the growth of our rugby reputation," said Mike Dunafon, Mayor of Glendale. "Enroll the kids in the camp, then sit back and enjoy the world's fastest contact sport without skates."
