Shawn Anderson Pedaled 4,000 Miles for Volunteer Heroes. 18 Years Later, 800+ Cities Have Seen Them, Too.

As Extra Mile Day approaches on November 1, founder Shawn Anderson is pushing for 500 cities to honor the volunteers and everyday heroes who strengthen their communities—a movement sparked by his 4,000-mile, 90-day search in 2009.

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Oct. 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- In 2009, Shawn Anderson set out from San Francisco on a bicycle and pedaled more than 4,000 miles to Boston over 90 days. Along the way, he met more than 200 people who were going the extra mile in volunteerism and service to others.

At the end of the journey, after evaluating the stories he had heard, Anderson selected ten people whose stories inspired him most and gave each $1,000.

Their stories inspired him to create Extra Mile Day.

In its first year, 23 cities made the declaration. Since then, more than 800 different U.S. cities across all 50 states have declared Extra Mile Day in one year or another.

The ride ended. The mission didn't.

Now in its 18th year, Extra Mile Day continues to call attention to people whose contributions often go unnoticed: volunteers, neighbors, and everyday helpers who make life better for others without expecting recognition.

"We live in a world that claps for fame. But some of the people making the biggest difference in other people's lives will never make the news or hear the words 'thank you.' They give with their time and their hearts. They keep showing up—and somebody else's life is better because they did. I started looking for them in 2009, and I'm still doing it today," Anderson said.

Participating cities are asked to declare November 1 Extra Mile Day and highlight local volunteers and everyday unsung heroes whose service strengthens their communities.

"I think about the teacher buying supplies with her own money. The volunteer who spends hours every week trying to find homes for forgotten pets. The neighbor who keeps showing up for the senior next door who's too old to mow her lawn. These people rarely get recognition. But take them out of the picture, and somebody's life gets harder. I'm trying to create a moment when we stop, look around, and say, 'We see you. What you do matters. Thank you!'" Anderson said.

"In an election year, getting cities on board has been more challenging. But I'm deeply grateful for every mayor, council member, and town official who understands why this matters. This isn't about red or blue. It's about the people who show up when somebody needs help. They keep showing up for others. We need to show up for them," Anderson said.

As November 1 approaches, Anderson is making a final push to bring 500 cities into this year's Extra Mile Day. The goal is simple: give communities a reason to pause, recognize the people who make a difference, and say thank you.
