The November 1 observance has grown from 23 cities in 2009 into a nationwide effort to recognize people who make a difference without seeking recognition.
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Oct. 22, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- A movement that began with 23 U.S. cities is working toward this year's goal: 500+ cities recognizing the people who quietly make their communities better. Since its founding in 2009, Extra Mile Day has been declared by more than 800 different U.S. cities spanning all 50 states.
Extra Mile Day, observed annually on November 1, invites mayors and local governments to recognize individuals and organizations whose volunteerism, service, and everyday actions help strengthen community life.
"We celebrate the people who make headlines. But what about the people who make a difference and never get one?" said Shawn Anderson, founder of Extra Mile Day and Extra Mile America. "They're the ones checking on a lonely neighbor, showing up for a struggling family, keeping a community program alive, or giving their time when they've got precious little left. They keep showing up when nobody's watching. Nobody's clapping. Nobody's even saying thank you. They don't need a spotlight to do what they do. But they deserve one."
Founded by Anderson in 2009, Extra Mile Day was created to give communities a formal opportunity to recognize people who go beyond what is expected to help others. Participating cities issue proclamations and spotlight local Extra Mile Heroes—residents and organizations whose contributions might otherwise go unnoticed.
The campaign's growth reflects a simple idea: recognizing people who serve others can help reinforce the value of service itself.
"I don't want November 1 to be just another date on a calendar. I want it to be the day cities say to their volunteers, 'We see what you do. It matters. And we're grateful,'" Anderson said. "Recognition won't solve every problem a community faces. But how can we ask people to keep giving when we can't even take a day to say their giving matters?"
Extra Mile Day is part of Extra Mile America's broader mission to encourage people to live more passionate, positive, and purposeful lives through meaningful action. As November 1 approaches, the organization is encouraging additional cities to participate and residents to identify the Extra Mile Heroes in their own communities.
"You don't have to change the whole world to make a difference in it. Sometimes, you change one person's day. One person's burden. One person's belief that somebody cares," Anderson said. "And you may never know how much that one act meant to them. That's why we can't stop noticing. We can't stop showing up. That's why Extra Mile Day matters."
