NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., March 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- John Frank, Vice Chairman of Sidney Frank Importing Company of New Rochelle, NY, presented a check for $100,000.00 to Mary Young, CEO of the Greenwich Connecticut Chapter of the American Red Cross with a special earmark for the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund.

The American Red Cross is in close contact with their partners in the Pacific region to offer support. On Friday, March 18, an official at the Japanese Red Cross said, "The compassion the American people have demonstrated over the past week through their generous support to the American Red Cross is incredibly uplifting at a time when we are dealing with such an immense humanitarian tragedy. This financial support is very much needed and continues to be welcomed to help the hundreds of thousands of lives that will forever be changed by this disaster."

The American Red Cross has made an initial contribution of $10 million to the Japanese Red Cross Society to assist in its ongoing efforts to provide medical care and relief assistance. To date about 390,000 people are staying in the approximately 2,500 shelters operated by the government and supported by the Japanese Red Cross. The Japanese Red Cross specialist helicopter team has been mobilized to evacuate people from rooftops and to assist with the logistics of transporting medicine and food to hospitals. The Japanese Red Cross has 2,400 nurses trained nationwide to give emotional counseling and emotional support following major emergencies.
