Silicon Valley Moves To South Dakota: The Cedar Horse Workshop
Woodshop in South Dakota Inspiring a Movement Through Kickstarter
FAITH, S.D., Oct. 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- When small-town Luke Brown met Silicon Valley's Luke Burgis, an idea was born to bring the dying art of craftsmanship back to the world. On October 15th, 2014, Brown will launch Cedar Horse Workshop with a Kickstarter project to fund new tools, to inspire craftsmanship and creativity, and to teach the art of carpentry.
Brown started teaching himself carpentry at the age of seven on a ranch in South Dakota. After nearly twenty years of building cigar box guitars and other hand-made crafts, he met Burgis as a student in Rome, Italy. Over gyros and beer on a trip to Greece, Brown was inspired to renew the art of craftsmanship for a new generation.
"What you're doing in that small shop in South Dakota needs to be shared with the world," Burgis told Brown in Greece.
Brown's vision and project are already sparking interest from many people interested in more fulfilling work and quality craftsmanship. Supported by Burgis' company activprayer and soon to appear on Art of Manliness, Brown's Kickstarter project called "The Beer Hammer" features a personalized, handmade bottle-opener. Brown's goal is to raise money for better tools so that he can make better products and teach others the trade. The project is already inspiring others to take up the craft: Burgis is building a wooden weight sled in Rome, and Brown will appear at activprayer's national gathering ACTIVEIGHT in Phoenix Oct. 23-26 to teach attendees how to make hand-crafted gifts for loved ones. Brown hopes that it's the start of a movement.
"This project has the potential to impact lives because it's ultimately about more than building bottle openers...it's about building character and investing in something that has a deeper reward," says Brown.
Craftsmanship has a long way to catch up with technology, but Brown is dedicated and ready to take advantage of technology to inspire a new generation of artists and foster a renewed interest in craftsmanship.
