NEW YORK, Sept. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Detecting thyroid cancer, the fastest rising cancer among women in the United States, may come down to a simple test: Check your neck. And that is exactly what the Light of Life Foundation (LOL) encourages people to do during Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month (September) and beyond; and to visit checkyourneck.com. It could save their life.
"Early detection is key to diagnosing and treating thyroid cancer," said Joan Shey, president of LOL and a thyroid cancer survivor. "So please have your physician check your neck, tell your loved ones and friends, and spread this simple message on Facebook and Twitter."
“Thyroid cancer is often discovered as a lump in the thyroid gland by either the patient or their health care provider,” noted Michael Tuttle, MD, LOL’s vice chairman of the board. “Ask your physician to check your neck at your next routine physical. And, if you see or feel a lump or nodule on the front of your neck, you should talk your doctor,” added Dr. Tuttle who is also a Professor of Medicine at Weill Medical College at Cornell University, and Member at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Thyroid cancer is a cancerous tumor or growth (nodule) located within the thyroid gland. While accounting for only about 1 out of every 100 cancers in the US, thyroid cancer is the fastest rising cancer among women in America. It is diagnosed three times more often in women than in men.
In 2011, the American Cancer Society estimates that 48,020 new cases of thyroid cancer will be diagnosed and treated in the United States. Because of the excellent overall survival after treatment for thyroid cancer, there are at least 350,000 thyroid cancer survivors living in the US. With appropriate initial therapy, 30-year survival rates of thyroid cancer are usually more than 90%.
Founded in 1997, LOL's mission is to improve the quality of life of thyroid cancer patients through continual education of the general and the medical community, and by promoting research and development to improve thyroid cancer care.
