Simply Electronics: Third Quarter Sales Figures for Consumer Electronics Look Good

NEW YORK, Nov. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- An ABC News article reported on the recently released sales figures that sellers and manufacturers of popular consumer electronic devices shared with the marketplace. The reports, for the most part, stated earnings for the third quarter of 2012. A leading online retailer of consumer electronics, Simply Electronics, commented on these new figures and what they could mean going forward.

The article discussed video game systems manufactured by both Microsoft and Nintendo. Microsoft, maker of the popular Xbox 360 video game system, sold 1.7 million consoles during the third quarter. In the same time frame during 2011, consumers purchased 2.3 million of the devices. The article notes the change marks a 26 percent decline from a year ago.

According to the article, Nintendo also realized a decline in sales when compared to numbers from 2011. Between April 1 and September 30, 2012, the gaming giant sold 1.32 million Wii consoles. During the same six month span a year prior, the company sold 3.35 million Wii video game systems.  Sales are expected to pick up later this month when the company releases the new Wii U system.

The article indicates sales of Apple's popular iPhones were up 58 percent from the previous year. AT&T reported activating 4.7 million of the 26.9 million devices sold. On the other hand, sales of the music device called the iPod were down 19 percent, notes the article.

In a statement to the press, Simply Electronics commented on the figures going into the holiday season. The company noted: "Though many figures are down from just one year ago, there does not appear to be cause for alarm throughout the consumer electronics industry. A number of new products are expected to hit the market in coming months, and it is likely consumers are waiting to update their existing devices with the latest available models."

A number of other smartphone manufacturers shared sales figures as well. The article reports the Finnish company Nokia experienced a 63 percent drop in smartphone sales. Specific numbers went from 16.8 million to 6.3 million. Nokia expects to release a new version of the Windows-based smartphone device it calls Lumia in select markets through the end of the year.
