SiPort Ships Over One Million HD Radio Receiver ICs into Mobile Consumer Markets
SP1010's Optimized Power, Performance, Package and Price drive adoption of HD Radio
SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- SiPort Inc., the world's leading supplier of Digital Radio ICs to mobile consumer markets, announced today that it has shipped over one million SP1010 digital radio receiver chips into the fast-growing mobile consumer products markets. SiPort's groundbreaking SP1010 chip is featured in a majority of mobile media player platforms, including the award-winning Microsoft Zune HD media player.
"SiPort was founded with the single fundamental objective of bringing digital radio to the masses," said Dave Rolston, president and CEO at SiPort. "Our approach is to use SiPort's architectural and silicon engineering expertise to deliver high-performance, low power receivers that are compatible with a volume semiconductor business model to serve large consumer markets."
SiPort's SP1010 receiver was fabricated using industry leader TSMC's RF CMOS process to achieve higher performance and best sensitivity per milliwatt than any competitive solutions. The key to this achievement is the deployment of a self-tunable radio technology specifically developed for mobile terrestrial digital radio use. By combining a CMOS RF tuner and a baseband receiver in a compact and low power IC, SiPort enables lowest power, smallest package, excellent performance and price point needed to receive digital audio and digital data services on a variety of portable devices such as MP3 players, personal navigation systems and mobile phones.
"Now that HD Radio programming is widely available, with more than 2,000 stations reaching 85% of the U.S. population, driving broad consumer adoption hinges on offering compelling, competitively-priced HD Radio devices," said Susan Kevorkian, program director at IDC. "Solutions like SiPort's that address the dynamic consumer portable and mobile device markets are expected to be instrumental in attracting consumers to HD Radio."
About HD Radio
HD Radio™ Technology is a free over-the-air digital broadcast from radio stations in conjunction with their analog signals. This new technology enables radio stations to simulcast both digital and analog audio within the same channel as well as add new channels and data services. By subdividing the data stream into sub-channels, HD Radio Technology supports many new features including pause, rewind, and play functionality, searchable content by genre, the tagging of a song for future online purchase, and digital data services.
About SiPort:
