With the momentum of a successful small car event that they produced in 2006, four Chicagoland couples now present The World Meet 2010, featuring 400+ vintage micro and minicars along with 50-60 modern small passenger cars. Our automotive past, present and future will be presented on the pastoral grounds of 100 South Main Street in Crystal Lake, including an electric car of the future.
Free to the public, visitors can expect: Meeting the car owners -- Joy Rides -- People's Choice Award voting (all ages) -- Local restaurant and catering food and snacks onsite -- Clinics -- Guest Speakers -- Meeting the creators of Micro and Mini Cars -- Awards Ceremony.
The excitement of the weekend has already caught the attention of Americans as two different caravans of microcars – originating on West and East Coasts – meander their way along the back roads of the US en route to Crystal Lake. Both groups arrive to the Meet site by Friday.
The ingenuity of these vintage small cars – all under 1500cc, many arriving under their own power and getting 90miles/gallon – is appreciated today with fuel costs skyrocketing and the automobile industry seeking alternatives to gas guzzling, heavy vehicles. Often known as "bubble cars" and emerging on the European scene in the late 1940s, visitors will have a chance to ride in cars being made available for "joy rides" at the Meet site. Additionally, the bright colors and size of these cars delight children, their designs appeal to women and the technologies intrigue men. Everyone loves the histories!
The event producers – Ken & Sylvia Weger, owners of the Small Wonders Microcar Museum (Crystal Lake), along with co-hosts Burt Richmond & Diane Fitzgerald (Chicago), Larry & Marybeth Claypool (Frankfort) and Arnie & Lena Press (Vernon Hills) – happily share their enthusiasm for small cars with other car collectors from around the world and the interested, curious public by organizing a judged car show with awards, workshops and seminars, parts swapping and local tours.
