Small-Town Kentucky Chef Will Compete in World Food Championships
Competition is held November 8 through 14, 2017, in Alabama
PROVIDENCE, Ky., Aug. 15, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Chef Willie O'Nan from Providence, Kentucky, population 3000, will be competing for the second time in the World Food Championships held this year in Orange Beach, Alabama, November 8 to 14. A dark horse, O'Nan qualified for the competition unexpectedly in 2016 when he placed second in Kentucky for desserts in a preliminary screening round.
O'Nan currently has three corporate sponsors: Prop & Peller Pretzels, The Baconarium, and Lebice Popsicles, none of which are based in Kentucky. He still needs to raise at least $2,000 to cover the cost of himself and two teammates traveling to Alabama and competing. O'Nan has set up a GoFundMe page to help with his fundraising and hopes to secure more sponsors.
All graduates of the Culinary Arts Program at Ivy Tech in Evansville, Indiana, O'Nan and his teammates are spending most of their time now preparing for the competition. "We really need some more funding, but Lebice is doing everything possible to help including assigning their marketing person to me. The more success I have, the more I can give back to my community. This is the chance of a lifetime for all of us," said O'Nan. On September 8, 2017, O'Nan and his teammates will be featured on 44News out of Evansville, Indiana, at 7:40AM. Upcoming articles about him will be appearing in print in the Ashland Daily Independent (KY) and online with Kentucky Monthly Magazine.
