SMBC to Celebrate Sanctuary Restoration with Top Houston Organist
HOUSTON, Aug. 24, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- A three-year capital campaign comes to a close this weekend at South Main Baptist Church, a beacon of faith in Houston's Midtown community, with the unveiling of their new pipe organ. The organ, a focal point of the 1930s church building, marks the final stage of the Generations capital campaign which the church initiated for Sanctuary updates and building repair to continue to serve their growing community. Designed and installed by Little Rock-based organ builders Nichols & Simpson, the new pipe organ has been undergoing tonal finishing to match it to the room for the last month.
"We are delighted we had the opportunity to provide the new instrument for South Main Baptist and we are excited to see it shine this weekend. It has been a labor of love that our entire team has had a part in creating," said Joe Nichols, President of Nichols & Simpson.
The celebration begins with an organ recital on Saturday, August 26th at 6:30 p.m. with decorated organist Daryl Robinson. Robinson, the Director of Organ Studies at University of Houston's Moores School of Music, has performed across the world from Washington D.C. to Shanghai. With a setlist that includes classics from Johann Sebastian Bach and a new piece by Aaron David Miller commissioned for the occasion, the evening will be one to remember.
Following the evening of music, South Main Baptist Church will continue the historic dedication weekend with a full day of events on Sunday, August 27th. At 11:20 a.m. the church congregation, City of Houston officials, and representatives from the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship will join together for a Celebration Worship and Dedication of the Restoration of the Sanctuary. Before and after the service, SMBC will host an Open House of the Sanctuary focused on building renovations and a community brunch around the campus.
Pastor Steve Wells is encouraged by the refreshed energy that the Generations campaign has created. "This is a special time for South Main Baptist Church; we are excited to be able to continue supporting our growing church body and welcome the community to our updated Sanctuary with this one-of-a-kind Nichols & Simpson organ."
