Snip.it Goes Live for Those Whose Opinions Don't Fit on Bumper Stickers
Social Curation Site Helps Users Find Their Voices around Interests and Issues as They Evolve
SAN FRANCISCO, March 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Snip.it, a new social curation service, today moved out of beta and officially announced its site. With Snip.it, anyone can collect or 'snip' pieces of content on the web and organize them into sharable galleries of topics they're most passionate about.
Snip.it's dedicated user base has generated hundreds of thousands of snips on thousands of global topics from Politics to Health, Sports and Film; current events such as SXSW; special interests such as Fashion and Yoga; and global developments such as the violence in Syria. Snip.it is ideal for today's readers, thinkers and communicators who want to delve deeper into the topics that interest them. Already in use by journalists, researchers, students, passionate citizens, and professionals, Snip.it enables anyone to follow and lend their voice to important conversations.
The site was founded in the spring of 2011 when Egypt-born, San Francisco-based Ramy Adeeb, then a principal at Khosla Ventures, was increasingly asked by friends to share his thoughts and articles on the Arab Spring. Unable to find a permanent and centralized place to collect, share and opine on all the content he had been reading, he teamed with former Twitter developer Mark Percival to form Snip.it.
"Once in beta, we were excited to watch Snip.it users embrace genuine discovery and learning through knowledge sharing, substantive debate and a level of respect we've rarely seen anywhere else on the web," said Snip.it Founder Ramy Adeeb. "After demonstrating just how powerful and attractive the service was to our early users, we're proud to open up Snip.it to the rest of the world, where we believe it will take sharing and discussions on topics that truly matter to an entirely new level."
How Snip.it Works
After registering for an account, users select the topics and collections they want to subscribe to while creating collections of their own. As they explore the web, users press the Snip.it bookmark to instantly snip and save articles, images, video and other content to one or more of their categorical collections. Users can then add commentary to their snips before sharing the content in full with their communities on Snip.it, Twitter and Facebook. The entire process takes just a few seconds.
Snip.it encourages both discovery and a deeper dive into the topics and issues people care about. The permanence and structure of Snip.it collections provides a welcome alternative to the fleeting nature of content sharing via other social media and blogging tools. In addition to English, Snip.it offers 14 language-specific curated sections, with more coming in the next month.
