Snowmass Village to host Colorado Scottish Festival August 1-2, 2015
Long-Time Douglas County Festival Finds New Home in the Mountains
SNOWMASS VILLAGE, Colo., Jan. 21, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Colorado Scottish Festival, held for 25 years at Highland Heritage Park in Douglas County, is moving to Snowmass Village, August 1-2, 2015.
John Thornton, executive director of the Festival, said the move came after Snowmass approached the Festival to become one of the major signature events in the Roaring Fork Valley. "Along with the Town of Snowmass' invitation, came important offers of support and the opportunity to reach a major new audience," Thornton said.
"We are very grateful for the years of support afforded to us by the Douglas County Commissioners and Parks Department, and by the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District. It is with regret that we leave such an outstanding venue as Highland Heritage Park," Thornton said.
As the Festival has become more popular, it has outgrown the Douglas County venue, especially in terms of available parking. In addition, Thornton said the event's costs have been rising, and there are numerous competing events in the Denver Metro area each weekend in the summer. "In Snowmass' amazingly beautiful setting, we will be the major event of the weekend," Thornton said. He expects the Festival in Snowmass to draw people from across the Roaring Forks Valley, and from Denver, Colorado Springs, Durango, Gunnison, and as far away as Utah.
"We're thrilled to welcome the Colorado Scottish Festival to Snowmass Village in summer 2015," said Markey Butler, Snowmass Village Mayor. "A great event deserves a great backdrop, and we're confident that Snowmass' scenic beauty, service and friendliness will exceed the expectations of event organizers and attendees."
The Colorado Scottish Festival, now in its fifty-second year, is sponsored by the St. Andrew Society of Colorado, which is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about Celtic music, history, dance and culture. The Society, which is open to all who are interested in Scottish, Irish and Welsh culture, was founded in 1963 and supports an annual dinner in January celebrating Robert Burns, poet laureate of Scotland, as well as other events open to the public throughout the year.
