SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP LEADER CHERYL DORSEY TO DELIVER PRESIDIO GRADUATE SCHOOL 2013 COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS
SAN FRANCISCO, May 29, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Presidio Graduate School will welcome Cheryl Dorsey, president of the pioneering social entrepreneur funding organization Echoing Green, as its 2013 Commencement speaker on Saturday, June 1. She will address the new MBA, MPA and Dual Degree program graduates on hand for the 2 PM ceremony at Herbst at the Presidio, 385 Moraga Avenue in San Francisco.
Trained as a pediatrician, Dorsey was a Harvard University medical student when she received an Echoing Green Fellowship in 1992 to help launch The Family Van, a mobile health unit for residents of Boston's underserved inner-city neighborhoods. She became president of Echoing Green a decade later, enabling other social entrepreneurs to find investors for their promising ideas and create ventures that promote positive change. Since its creation in 1987, Echoing Green has awarded more than $30 million in start-up funds to social entrepreneurs, supporting what are now some of the world's most effective social change organizations.
Dorsey has earned numerous accolades for her leadership of Echoing Green. In both 2010 and 2011, the Nonprofit Times included her among its "Power and Influence Top 50." In 2009, she was named one of "America's Top Leaders" by US News & World Report and the Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School.
"We are honored to have Cheryl Dorsey join us on this important day for our school and our graduates. As an individual and a professional, Cheryl exemplifies the vision and enterprise that those of us in the Presidio Graduate School community value so highly. She is certain to inspire us with not only her message, but the life she had led. Cheryl and Echoing Green represent the very best of what Presidio seeks to produce: people and institutions that change the world," says Presidio Graduate School President William Shutkin.
In addition to leading Echoing Green, Dorsey served as a White House Fellow and special assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Labor and special assistant to the director of the Women's Bureau of the U.S. Department of Labor during the Clinton administration. More recently, she has assisted the Obama administration as vice chair of the President's Commission on White House Fellowships, a position she has held since 2009. She also served as a transition team member of the Innovation and Civil Society subgroup of the Technology, Innovation and Government Reform Policy Working Group from 2008 to 2009.
Dorsey holds a bachelor's degree in history and science, medical degree and master's degree in public policy, all from Harvard University.
