Sotheby's Institute of Art Now Accepting Registrations for Autumn Course in Mainland China
Contemporary Art in China Today: Hangzhou, September 3 - 6, 2013
NEW YORK, July 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Sotheby's Institute of Art is now accepting registrations for an educational course that will be offered in China this autumn: Contemporary Art in China Today (September 3 - 6, 2013), offered in partnership with the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. This exciting four-day course is designed for art world professionals and enthusiasts seeking to increase their knowledge and understanding of the structures, techniques and cultural contexts of contemporary Chinese art. Translation to and from Mandarin and English will be provided.
Taught by professional experts and scholars in the field, the course provides an understanding of the latest developments in contemporary art in China today. Through lectures and exclusive visits to artists' studios and local museums, participants will gain insight into the background and practice of art in China across a range of media such as ink painting and printmaking. The course covers art forms that are unique to Chinese culture as well as recent trends in art practice pursued by the emergent generation of artists. While the primary focus is on recent developments over the past decade, a brief background of twentieth-century art in China will be covered.
The course will be led by Katie Hill, a lecturer at Sotheby's Institute of Art for the Master's programme in East Asian Art and the online course in Contemporary Chinese Art. The site visits take place in and around the China Academy of Art, which was founded in 1928 in Hangzhou and is today considered one of the most influential fine art academies in China. The course is organized in association with Culture Continuum Consulting Co., Ltd.
