Southeast Ohio hunting, recreational land set for auction

ATHENS, Ohio, Aug. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Approximately 2,500 acres of woodlands in southeast Ohio -- including recreational land in some of the state's top deer hunting counties -- will be offered at auction in September. Schrader Real Estate and Auction Company will market the land and conduct the auction in cooperation with Murray Wise Associates.

The auction will include land in Muskingum, Athens, Meigs and Gallia Counties, offered in 66 tracts.

"This auction includes 516 acres in Muskingum County, which is ranked second in the state for trophy deer by the Buckeye Big Buck Club. We also have 878 acres in Athens County, which the club ranks fifth in Ohio. Muskingum County also has the third largest overall turkey harvest in the state, so this is some excellent land for hunting and recreation," said R.D. Schrader, president of the auction company.

Also selling in the auction will be 1,040 acres in Meigs County and 71 acres in Gallia County.

Schrader said the auction will be structured to allow those who wish to buy small amounts of land to bid on a level playing field with those who might be seeking larger amounts. "A lot of people are not in a position to buy hundreds or thousands of acres, so nearly all of the tracts will be less than 100 acres, and the biggest tract will be 175 acres. For buyers seeking larger properties, we have two contiguous stretches of land, both including more than 500 acres," said Schrader. "The land also has a lot of interior roads and trails providing access, and there are a number of tracts with good building sites and merchantable timber."

The auction will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 26, at the Athens Community Center in Athens. Auction staff will be available at two inspection locations from 3 to 6 p.m. on August 26 and September 10.
