SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Spansion Inc. (NYSE: CODE), a leading provider of NOR Flash memory, today announced a collaboration with Freescale on a memory expansion module for the Freescale Tower System that provides design engineers more flexibility in prototyping a growing range of embedded applications, including factory automation, industrial computers, medical devices, point of sales, and robotics. The Spansion peripheral module will expand the code and data storage capabilities of the Tower System and support the increasing use of 2D and 3D graphics in today's electronics.

Designers using the Tower System experience a customizable embedded design environment with mix-and-match tool selections to suit their design needs. Interchangeable, easy-to-use modules reuse hardware across multiple designs and architectures, speeding time to market and reducing development costs.
The Spansion-designed memory module uses PISMO™ 2 compliant memory cards to allow designers to interchange different memories and/or densities for rapid prototyping, such as Spansion® GL parallel NOR flash memory and Spansion FL serial NOR Flash memory among other volatile and non-volatile memories.
The memory module complements all Freescale controller boards including Kinetis™, ColdFire®, and Power Architecture® Technologies. Freescale is expected to go into production with the memory expansion module in the fourth quarter of 2011.
