Spending More on Software Doesn't Guarantee Better Productivity

A recent Accenture report written by The Economist Intelligence Unit highlights that businesses are doubling their expenditure on digital software. The report analysed the views of 1,400 C-suite executives globally. In 2014, less than one-third (31 %) of C-suite executives emphasised the revenue opportunities presented by digital investments, whereas in 2015 61 % cited digital initiatives as a tool for growth.

Despite these findings, economists have struggled to explain poor productivity performance over the past few years.

Research from Mindlab International at The Sussex Innovation Centre suggested that companies would benefit from investing less in traditional, linear office software tools such as spreadsheets, text documents and server files. The research measured brain activity and compared the effectiveness of traditional linear software against visual Mind Mapping software. During everyday office tasks, participants needed 20 % less mental resources when using Mind Mapping software. They were 17 % more productive when using visually displayed information compared to traditional office software. This highlights the positive impact visual Mind Mapping software has in comparison to its linear, more traditional counterparts.
