Springfield, Mo. Cosmetic Dentist Helps Patients Fight Back Against Sleep Deprivation
SPRINGFIELD, Miss., March 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Barnett-Davis Dental Group is observing National Sleep Awareness Month by helping patients resolve common contributors to getting a bad night's sleep: sleep apnea, jaw pain and snoring.
"Poor or un-refreshing sleep can impact everything from work performance and mood to driving abilities the next day," said Springfield MO cosmetic dentist, Dr. Kelly Barnett, who also is an award-winning cosmetic dentistry provider at the Springfield, Mo. dental clinic.
Research has linked sleep deprivation to chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and depression. One study shows that driving sleep deprived can be as dangerous as driving with a blood alcohol level about the legal limit.
In 2008 and 2009, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention surveyed adults across the U.S. and 29.7 percent of the men and women from Missouri stated they had not gotten enough sleep on 14 or more days in the past 30 days.
"Those numbers are staggering, and our state isn't even the worst in the U.S. for sleep deprivation." said Dr. Marc Barnett, who does restorative dentistry procedures, including mini dental implants.
These are some symptoms the National Sleep Foundation said indicate poor sleep or sleep deprivation:
- Extremely drowsy during the day
- Headaches or earaches in the morning
- Sudden, unexplained weight gain
- Sleep that is not refreshing
- Diminished attention, concentration or memory abilities
"Someone with chronic bruxism may also notice wear on their teeth and jaw pain or stiffness," said Dr. Nick Matthews, who is a Nixa dentist.
There are ways to inhibit snoring and reduce pain associated with problems of the joints and muscles of the jaw or affected by nighttime teeth grinding. The NSF recommends a dental appliance as one treatment option.
"Our office offers comfortable, custom-made snore guards and mouth guards for patients with bruxism or temporomandibular joint disorders," said Dr. Tracy Davis. "Start getting the sleep that is so essential to your quality of life. We can help you find relief."
