St. Thomas University Expands Faculty Diversity

MIAMI, Jan. 16, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- St. Thomas University recently appointed two new faculty members who reflect the university's growing diversity of scholars.

Dr. Yanhui Guo has been appointed as the new Assistant Professor for Computer Science for St. Thomas' School of Science, Technology and Engineering Management. Before joining the Miami academic community, Dr. Guo attended China's Zhengzhou University for his undergraduate degree. For graduate school he attended the Harbin Institute of Technology, receiving his master's degree in computer science. He obtained his doctorate in Utah State University, conducting further research as a fellow scholar in the University of Michigan. His research has included designing and implementing bill classification systems and participating in projects related to business operations. He has also published scholarly works in academic journals for the sciences as well as conference journals such as the European Journal of Scientific Research and Journal of Digital Imaging. Dr. Guo's specialties include computer vision, medical image processing, pattern recognition and Chinese handwriting character recognition among others.   

Dr. Sony Jalarajan Raj is St. Thomas' new Assistant Professor for Communication Arts in the Institute for Communication, Entertainment, and Media at the School of Leadership Studies. A  lecturer in journalism, mass communications, and media studies, He obtained his masters' degrees  in Madurai Kamaraj University and the University of Kerala and his doctorate degree in mass communication and journalism at the School of Sciences of M.G. University.

His levels of expertise revolve around communications for business journalism, television and video production, communication theory, international journalism and sports reporting. He has published academic articles in scholarly journals such as the Australian Journal of Communication, Indian Social Review and the Indian Research Essence. Dr. Raj has held academic positions as an Associate Member in the Economic and Business Modeling Unit, Member of the Core Committee, and Chairman and Examiner of the Board of Examinations in  Monash University, Mahatma Gandhi University, and Curtin University of Technology.
