LOS ANGELES, Feb. 12, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Chicago School of Professional Psychology applauds President Obama on his signing of the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans (SAV) Act, a critical law aimed at the prevention of suicides among veterans, now estimated at 18-22 per day, according to a 2012 report from the Department of Veterans Affairs. We believe that this legislation is an important first step in providing mental health services to our veterans and active service members. Graduates of The Chicago School stand ready to meet the SAV Act's requirements that ensure that veterans will have faster access to critical health services.
In 2013, The Chicago School established the National Center for Research and Practice, Veteran and Military Psychology, which is focused on providing practitioners with a broad understanding of military psychological challenges, and to support research and training that address the recognition and treatment of mental health issues facing this population. Dr. Eric Morrison director of the National Center, is working the Veterans' Administration's mental health referral process that was recently passed that allows veterans to be referred to practitioners from The Chicago School, and to address the backlog of mental health appointments and wait times.
The Chicago School's National Center recently conducted research with CommonHealth ACTION to screen the best local, state and national programs for veterans, which was presented at the 2014 American Psychological Association's National Convention in Washington, D.C. In 2012, and subsequent years, The Chicago School was named to the list of Military Friendly Schools, that honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America's military service members, veterans, and military family members.
