Statement by Kathy Jellison, President of SEIU Local 668, on the Senate Passage of FMAP Funding
HARRISBURG, Pa., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following was released today by SEIU Local 668:
We are pleased that the Senate has passed the FMAP funding, and we thank Senators Casey and Specter for their support. We expect the House will approve the funding next week, as they have supported it in the past.
However, it is important to note that this still leaves a budget deficit in Pennsylvania of $250 million. We are still facing layoffs and cuts in vital programs.
On behalf of over 20,000 members who provide vital human services at the state and county levels, I urge legislators and the Governor to consider the many suggestions our union members have made for raising revenue without cutting programs.
Program cuts hurt struggling families, children, senior citizens and other vulnerable people. This affects the health and safety of all of our communities.
It is time for big corporations to pay their fair share – they are getting too many tax breaks that the rest of us are paying for.
Big companies get discounts for paying their taxes on time! That has to stop – aren't we all supposed to pay our taxes?
We must also close the Delaware corporate tax loophole that allows 70% of Pennsylvania corporations to pay no taxes in our state.
Big Oil companies should pay a tax for taking shale and our other natural resources, and they should pay penalties when they destroy the environment by cutting corners to increase profits.
Lawmakers and the Governor must focus on making corporations pay their fair share of taxes. Laying off more workers will mean serious cuts in vital human service programs and hurting the most vulnerable people in our state.
We continue to stand ready to assist the Governor and legislative leaders in identifying ways to address this budget shortfall without layoffs and program cuts.
