Statement from Sherry Friedlander of A Child Is Missing Program On Rescue of Amanda Berry and her minor child; Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., May 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- We at A Child is Missing join the nation in gratitude and celebration upon hearing the news of the stunning rescues in Cleveland this week of Amanda Berry and her child, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight. While these young women rejoin their families and begin their arduous recovery, it is important that our nation not lose sight of the need for increased vigilance, education and training to prevent such abuses of our most precious resource – our children. Sadly children disappear every day in our country, often to tragic end. In Cleveland many neighbors of the house where the young women were imprisoned for 10 years were incredulous about what had happened right under their nose. Would more awareness and community training afforded these good people and neighbors and observers of other cases have made a difference? We will never know. However, more public outreach and funding of inter-agency programs will only save more children.
