Statement from Suffolk PBA president Noel DiGerolamo on selection of Edward Webber to become the county's new Police Commissioner
BOHEMIA, N.Y., July 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Suffolk Police Benevolent Association welcomed the selection of 40-year police department veteran Edward Webber to become the county's new Police Commissioner. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone will officially announce the appointment of Webber, 65, of Bay Shore, this afternoon.
Suffolk PBA president Noel DiGerolamo released a statement this morning praising Bellone for helping to give new shape to the Suffolk Police Department as it embraces technological changes and an increasingly-diverse population in the county.
"The PBA is very comfortable with the selection of Edward Webber as Police Commissioner and I would like to commend County Executive Bellone for making what we feel is the correct decision. As a 40 year member of the of the Suffolk County Police Department, having served as Chief of Patrol and Chief of Support Services, where he was in charge of budgetary control, Edward Webber has the vast experience needed to manage the department. His institutional knowledge and experience will guide the department in providing services to the residents of Suffolk County, particularly during times of fiscal constraints," said DiGerolamo.
The Suffolk PBA represents over 4,000 active and retired officers and is one of the largest such organizations in New York State. Webber had been serving as acting Police Commissioner during a seven-month search and will become Suffolk's 12th Police Commissioner since the department was formed in 1960.
