STEM Education USA announces the 2017/2018 National STEM Award Recipient -- Peyton Robertson

Peyton Robertson, 15, is our youngest recipient to date. Robertson currently has five granted patents and nine additional patents pending. Named America's Top Young Scientist, Peyton is the youngest winner in the history of the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. A Grand Prize Winner in the National Science Foundation's Science Challenge, a Bevan Scholar, and a Davidson Scholar, Peyton is a prolific inventor. His innovations to date include real-time retractable training wheels which allow a beginning rider to use a bicycle's handle bar controls to retract and release training wheels while riding, a redesigned sandless sandbag enabling users to more effectively combat and prevent salt water flooding, and a convertible golf alignment stick designed to serve as both an on-range alignment aid and an in-round measurement device for the newly proposed USGA Rule 14.3 twenty inch free relief area. Peyton's innovations have been featured on the ABC World News, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, TED, and recognized at the White House Science Fair.

While a panelist at the NCAA Final Four Innovation Summit, Peyton spoke to the importance of science and technology education. At the Pebble Beach Pro Am Celebrity Challenge Peyton was paired with Clint Eastwood and PGA Professional Jimmy Walker. Together the three won $200,000 for science and math charities, $100,000 of which was donated to a charity founded by Peyton - the Multiplied Foundation. The Multiplied Foundation's mission is to support and expand STEM education. Each year, the Multiplied Foundation distributes 5% of its value to non-profit organizations or events supporting STEM education. Later this year, Peyton and the Multiplied Foundation will host Hack-A-Thon 1.0 – an event designed to introduce coding concepts and inspire future coders. In presentations, Peyton communicates complex science concepts succinctly and math practically. Peyton's recent biology research, published in the Journal of Tropical Diseases & Public Health, has focused on the ways innate RNA interference renders mosquitos asymptomatic to arboviral infection and how their immunity may provide new approaches to combat mosquito borne illness. Peyton is currently coding a Virtual Integrated Mass Collider which simulates the outcomes of planetary mass interactions, macroscopic collisions, and sub-atomic collisions (based on the CERN collider results) in order to develop an environment in which scientists and students can experiment with the outcomes of hypothetical collider experiments across mass sizes.
