DETROIT, March 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Wayne State University, C2 Pipeline Program can now add another first to its program accomplishments as it becomes the first 21st CCLC program in the U.S. to receive STEM Accreditation through STEM.org.
The C2 Pipeline program is funded through the Michigan Department of Education and works with high schools serving at-risk students from 15 high schools in 13 school districts across Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties to complement their day-school curriculums with after-school and summer programming. Principal Investigator and Project Director Don Neal, says these programs promote college and career readiness through the use of STEM-based project learning activities that have a focus on all health careers, such as nursing, medicine, social work, pharmacy and health science, engineering and business. In addition, our focus is to enhance and link to the student's secondary school experience.
"We are seeing an increase in students wanting to graduate high school on time and wanting to further their education," Neal says. "One of our other partners, the Michigan AHEC, will actually track those students once they get here (to WSU) or another institution to see if they completed college, if they are going into a health career, and where they're working. Our tracking model is truly longitudinal. We see our students graduating high school on time."
During the month of February, 15 C2 Pipeline Site Coordinators and day teachers from each C2 Pipeline school participated in STEM certification trainings led by STEM.org's Education Director Heather Miller. "Having teachers and Pipeline staff together, created a tremendous linkage between the day school and afterschool setting," says Neal. "It speaks volumes to the strength of relationships that we are building in that school principals released teachers from class to attend."
Andrew Raupp, Founder and Executive Director of STEM.org stated, "This achievement exhibits a true excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education. The C2 Pipeline Program's collective dedication to learning the principles and pedagogy involved with this process clearly demonstrates that the WSU C2 Pipeline program is a cut above the rest. The accreditation will be an inspiration to others who strive to be the best and reflects favorably upon the program staffs' inherent ability to serve as a role models to those who strive to demonstrate effective STEM strategies in their communities."
Currently, the C2 Pipeline program, which is the first 21st CCLC program in Michigan to focus solely on STEM and getting students college and career ready, is in its third year of operation. Participating high schools include: Clintondale, Cody Medicine and Community Health, Detroit Collegiate Prep, East Detroit, Ecorse, Harper Woods, Michigan Collegiate, Oak Park, Pontiac Academy Excellence, South Lake, Southfield Lathrup, Southfield Regional Academic Campus, University (Ferndale), Warren Mott and Waterford Mott. In addition to providing 32 weeks of programing in the schools, the program offers six weeks of summer programs on the campus at Wayne State University, which includes an 11-day residential program that is also the first of its kind.
