Steve Moore Launches Concussion Foundation

TORONTO, Dec. 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Steve Moore, former NHL player with the Colorado Avalanche, announces the public launch of The Steve Moore Foundation (SMF) at www.stevemoorefoundation.org, a Canada Revenue Agency approved charity focused on the prevention and treatment of concussion and similar serious head and neck injuries in sport.

Steve's own battle with concussion injury began in 2004, when his NHL career was ended by an assault by opposing player Todd Bertuzzi. Steve devoted the years following the incident to recovering from his injuries and to returning to his NHL career. After treatment for five years by world-leading doctors and rehabilitation specialists, and making significant progress, Steve was told he would not receive medical clearance to return to play the game he loved. During that process he realized that the understanding of concussion was in its infancy, that there are limited clinically proven treatments available, and that there is a need for more collaboration among many of the world's leading physicians. Thus, The Steve Moore Foundation was born, to facilitate increased collaboration opportunities, and to make real progress in the areas of concussion prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

SMF seeks to bring together the expertise, experiences, best practices and cutting edge technologies of the world's leaders in the field in order to advance our collective knowledge. The foundation's work encompasses both grass-roots education initiatives with youth athletes, as well as innovative research programs.

Established in 2010, SMF launches today after several years of laying the groundwork for the charity's plans and mission, including co-founding a charity fundraising event, and plans for an inaugural concussion conference to bring together professional athletes, Olympians and world-leading experts in the field.
