NEW YORK, May 1, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- "The Rise of the Role of Lieutenant Governor in New York" was the theme of a forum hosted today by the law firm Stroock & Stroock & Lavan and featuring Lieutenant Governor Robert J. Duffy.

Lieutenant Governor Duffy discussed his role in office with Robert Abrams, former New York State Attorney General and Chair of Stroock's Government Relations Practice.

"As the second highest elected official in the state, the lieutenant governor has significant influence on state policy," said Abrams. "Bob Duffy has played an integral role in formulating and implementing the Cuomo Administration's economic development agenda."

Jerry H. Goldfeder, Stroock special counsel and election law attorney, introduced the program.

As chair of the Regional Economic Development Councils, Duffy has worked with CEOs, university presidents and community leaders to help grow regional economies. "New York has invested $2 billion in regional councils in two years, crossing party lines in bringing people together to strengthen their areas," said Duffy.

Among his responsibilities, Duffy chairs the Spending and Government Efficiency Commission and the Regional Economic Development Councils. He also presided over the historic passage of the Marriage Equality Act in his capacity as President of the New York State Senate.

Last May, Duffy was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, which recognizes notable Americans who demonstrate a life committed to community service.

Previously, he served as Mayor, and earlier as Chief of Police, of Rochester. He holds degrees from the Rochester Institute of Technology and Syracuse University.

Today's event was the 13th in a series hosted by Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP during the last year. Previous participants included New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman; Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.; Congressman Jerrold Nadler; Patrick J. Foye, Executive Director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and Thomas F. Prendergast, President MTA New York City Transit. The most recent events featured Newark Mayor Cory Booker and former New York Governor David Paterson; Merryl Tisch, Ester Fuchs and Kathryn Wylde discussing women and the glass ceiling in the economy; and a panel on the economic impact of cultural institutions on New York City, with Emily K. Rafferty, President of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Katherine Farley, Chair of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts; and Kate D. Levin, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

The forum was sponsored by Stroock's Government Relations group, which is comprised of former prosecutors, judges, and government agency officials.  The practice is led by Mr. Abrams, who also served as President of the National Association of Attorneys General, Executive Chair of New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's Transition Committee and Honorary Co-Chair of Attorney General Schneiderman's Transition Committee.
