Students Applaud Ontario's Action Plan to Stop Sexual Violence and Harassment

OTTAWA, March 6, 2015 /CNW/ - The Canadian Federation of Students supports Ontario's Action Plan to Stop Sexual Violence and Harassment, announced today by Premier Kathleen Wynne. Students from across Canada have planned to meet later this month to develop a national vision to combat sexual violence and rape culture that builds on the work already being done across the country.

The theme of International Women's Day 2015 is, "Make it Happen," and Canada's students are doing just that. On March 19 and 20, students from across Canada will gather in Ottawa to develop a strategy to combat sexual violence and rape culture on campus.

"The Consent Culture Forum will bring together students and survivors of violence to organize towards effective and lasting change," said McCormick. "Rape culture and sexism remain an insidious presence on our campuses and in our communities, but students and our allies are coming together to stop the violence."

For more than 30 years, Canada's students have raised their voices and taken action in opposition to sexual and gender-based violence.

"All students deserve to feel safe where they study, work, and live," said Jessica McCormick, National Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students. "Other provincial and federal leaders should follow Premier Wynne's lead and develop similar plans in consultation with communities."
