Students Learn Financial Skills & Community Involvement with Senator Dennis Olshove, Christian Financial Credit Union
WARREN, Mich., May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Students at De La Salle Collegiate High School met with Senator Dennis Olshove and representatives of Christian Financial Credit Union as part of the Michigan Credit Union League's Financial Literacy Legislative Challenge. This year, the challenge connected 48 state legislators with students during Money Smart Week (April 17-24) and Financial Literacy Month in April.
"It is critical to the future success of these students and our economy that young people learn early on about the short- and long-term impact of financial decisions," said Lauren Vance, Vice President of Strategic Development & Product Delivery at Christian Financial Credit Union. "Christian Financial is excited to partner with De La Salle in educating students about personal finance and how to navigate account management." CFCU's Investment Representative, Ron Thompson, spoke to the students on saving for college. Christian Financial has been involved with De La Salle in creating a hands-on experience for the students to manage real-life accounts in cooperation with in-class financial education.
In addition to managing one's personal account landscape, Christian Financial also promotes being involved and giving back to the community. Senator Olshove shared ideas with the students on how to get involved in local happenings. Christian Financial also sponsored a contest which allowed students to recommend causes close to them to receive a donation from CFCU. Students picked the winning cause via Facebook. In the end, the DLS Basketball Team received a $100 donation from Christian Financial.
Michigan's credit unions are national leaders in youth financial education, reaching more than 47,000 students during the 2008-2009 school year and organizing more than 350 student-run credit unions across the state – both are the most is the country.
