Study Helps Medical Education Leaders Navigate the New Regulatory and Financial Landscape

CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Aug. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Medical education leaders in the medical device and pharmaceutical sectors are finding it challenging to navigate the current regulatory and financial landscape.

These challenges - one affecting program content and delivery and the other affecting resources - have made it even more important for medical education groups to effectively reach physicians and to efficiently use their resources.

To help medical education leaders succeed in this environment, research and consulting firm Best Practices, LLC conducted a study that pinpoints how organizations are developing and delivering education programs and which presenters and venues have the highest impact for physicians. In addition, the study reviews how companies are allocating their education budgets and developing performance measures to demonstrate their group's effectiveness.

The study, "Professional Medical Education Excellence: Benchmarking Critical Program Trends Transforming the Medical Device and Biopharmaceutical Marketplace," provides segments for both pharmaceutical and medical device companies.

One of the study's findings was that a majority of organizations in both the device and pharma segments expect their multi-disciplinary programs to increase in the next 2-3 years. With healthcare reform putting a greater emphasis on health outcomes, some education leaders believe the emphasis on coordination of care inherent in multi-disciplinary programs is behind the expected growth.

Other benchmarks and insights in the study include:

The study also informs education leaders on education trends in emerging markets.

The research project includes observations and insights from 32 leaders with 31 medical device and pharmaceutical companies. Participants included 14 medical education leaders from 14 medical device firms and 18 leaders from 17 biopharmaceutical companies.
