Supreme Court's split decision on Arizona's anti-immigration law highlights the urgent need for comprehensive federal immigration reform, says Wolfsdorf Immigration Law Group

SANTA MONICA, Calif., June 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- This week, the Supreme Court struck down three provisions of the anti-illegal immigration Arizona Senate Bill 1070.  These provisions include: one in which legal immigrants must have registration documents on their person at all times; one that permits state police to arrest any individual they deem to be an illegal immigrant; and one that forbids any illegal immigrant to seek, or hold, employment in the United States.  However, the court upheld the controversial "show me your papers" provision, which authorizes police to confirm the immigration status of an individual that they have stopped, detained or arrested, if they have reason to suspect that the individual might be in the country illegally. 

"While the Supreme Court declared haphazard state immigration laws are unacceptable, the court allowed the possibility for the 'show me your papers' provision to have a discriminatory impact," said Bernard P. Wolfsdorf continued, "The court's decision to sustain the racial profiling provision still leaves the door open for state interference in immigration policy."
