SWISSGEAR.com offered one $5,000 scholarship and two $2,500 scholarships for a creative submission to three students to assist with pursuing their education, demonstrating their definition on what makes the ideal backpack.
Winning first place for the $5,000 scholarship reward, Magdalene Beck is a sophomore at the University of Virginia and intends to major in Government or Public Policy with a minor in Spanish. The second place winner of one of the $2,500 scholarship rewards was Claire Rice, a student at the University of Central Florida's 'Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy' under the Art Track, majoring in Masters of Science in Interactive Entertainment. The third place winner of the second $2,500 scholarship reward was Ian Portwood, a junior at the University of Central Florida, and is majoring in Finance.
The scholarship opportunity was opened to both high school seniors and any student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program by August 1, 2015 at any accredited U.S. college, university or institute. The scholarship represented the first of an annual effort by SWISSGEAR to give back to a section of the backpack community that has loved its products throughout the brand's long and prominent history. Each applicant was required to submit an essay of 500 words or less describing what makes the "ultimate" backpack. Thousands of entries were received but Magdalene, Claire, and Ian were able to differentiate themselves by expressing the personal and deep seeded connection a person can have with their backpack.
