SEATTLE, April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The following blog post was published on April 8, 2010, by Shafeen Charania, author of the synthesis blog, winner of the 2008 Weblog award for best new blog, and Time.com's 25 best blogs of 2009.
Brain science is a new field, infant brain science is even newer. But some brilliant work is taking place at I-LABS at the University of Washington. One of their discoveries is proof that an infant is most receptive to learning any and all languages before they're a year old, and that ability diminishes over time – by the time you're in your 20s, it's pretty much a lost cause. Another insight is the pivotal need for human interaction in learning at young ages.
Combining these, we should be teaching languages in pre-kindergarten or earlier (we start around grade 8), and we should have substantially higher teacher-student ratios in early years. There are about 65 million students and 3 million teachers in America today. Is it possible for us to improve learning by listening brain science experts?
