Tactus Announces International Patent Grant in Key Japanese Market
Core Technology Patent Increases Tactus Patent Portfolio to 15 Granted Worldwide, 44 Pending
FREMONT, Calif., Oct. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Tactus Technology, Inc., the acknowledged leader in on-demand tactile surfaces, today announced it has been awarded a core patent by the Japanese Patent Office. Tactus' dynamic surfaces are a dramatic innovation in the Touch 2.0 revolution that consumers and OEMs are eagerly awaiting: screens that transform from a flat virtual interface into a physical three-dimensional interface when needed.
Consumers and OEMs are looking to augment the ubiquitous touchscreen with other interaction mechanisms, including voice, physical controls, eye tracking and other technologies. On-demand tactile surfaces are a unique way to combine the highly-desirable displays for content consumption with physical interfaces that are well-suited to the sense of touch and muscle memory that our fingers are biologically designed for. Tactus utilizes proven microfluidic technology to create dynamic tactile surfaces.
Developed as part of a broad R&D program spanning more than five years, this core patent application # 2010-541559, titled "User Interface System", joins the growing IP portfolio of Tactus, including 13 granted patents by the US Patent and Trademark Office as well as 1 core patent granted in China. Tactus has 33 additional US applications and 11 PCT worldwide applications.
A recent confirmation of the strength of the Tactus IP portfolio comes from IBM® Japan big data analyst Taku Torii, whose independent analysis showed that in the key area of tactile human-machine interfaces (one of the top five key technologies according to IBM strategy consulting), Tactus holds the strongest IP position of any vendor. Other companies' IP analyzed in this study included Apple®, Microsoft®, Nokia® and RIM®/Blackberry®, among others.
"The award of this core patent in Japan validates the basis of our fundamental technology patent claims in a key geography," said Dr. Micah Yairi, CTO and co-founder of Tactus. "The independent analysis reiterates the value of Tactus' strategy of long-term R&D to develop patents covering fundamental technology and its application and manufacturing to form the foundation of Touch 2.0."
