TAF Instructional At-Home Plan (IAHP)™ Helps Chicago Students Transcend Remediation to Achieve Acceleration
New research unveils program's dramatic success, quantifying the involvement of teachers and parents alike
CHICAGO, Feb. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- From the moment America's children step foot into a preschool, each young student is running an academic race. Yet students are struggling everywhere, putting teachers and schools in dire straits as they wrestle with closing the "achievement gap." Increasingly, teachers are relying on parents to help coach kids to the finish line, yet the extent to which this matters has been the subject of debate -- at least until now, according to Dr. Tanya Foster-DeMers, a Chicago-based, award-winning teacher and president of TAF Educational LLC (http://tafeducational.com).
"With the TAF Instructional At-Home Plan (IAHP)™, we finally have quantifiable proof that the right kind of program and parent involvement actually fuel student success," Foster-DeMers explains. "Research proves that this particular program closes not only the student achievement gap but the gaping hole in parent involvement that can be so critical for winning the race."
For two years, the IAHP has been implemented and assessed at a Chicago-based public school with predominantly African-American students and parents representing a 98 percent poverty level. Students using the IAHP performed statistically better than those not in the program. Moreover, IAHP students went from at-risk and/or below grade level to either at/or above grade level by the middle of the school year, transcending remediation and trending toward acceleration.
The findings also show that IAHP students' literacy performance improved nearly 60 percent over those not using IAHP. At year's end, 80 percent of the students were meeting or exceeding goals, with many demonstrating reading proficiency well above grade level.
"The education trajectory in this school changed with unprecedented, dramatic success," notes Foster-DeMers. "What's more, IAHP research indicated that regardless of race, income level or educational status, parents who were provided with the right tools and training statistically impacted educational outcomes."
Available and in-use with grades pre-kindergarten through third grade, the IAHP is a cultural revolution in education. By integrating early childhood education and parent involvement into a simple process and plan, it proactively provides academic consistency among the home, school, curriculum, and assessments for measurable results. Student performance is then rectified or accelerated using a systemized procedure that involves parents and teachers as active, covenant partners.
"TAF IAHP is an outright investment, but we're not talking finances here," Foster-DeMers concludes. "We're talking about a rebirth of critical accountability that drives all partners to be passionately involved in children's success and committed to long-lasting results."
